What is whiplash?
A whiplash injury is most commonly found as a result of a motor vehicle accident. The driver and passengers in the vehicle typically experience a sudden jolt, which will cause their heads to be thrust backwards and forward. A more accurate name for whiplash is “cervical acceleration/deceleration syndrome (CAD). During a car accident the impact causes a rapid movement of the neck which can injure the the vertebrae and cause mild to severe damage to the supporting ligaments and musculature. Whiplash can occur during any impact at 5 m.p.h. or greater. A lot of times what appears to be a very minor accident, with little to no damage to a car, can damage a person’s spine or the supporting structure.
Who gets whiplash?
While it is more common for us to see a whiplash injury in a patient who has been in a car accident, whiplash can occur during any impact to a person. What are the symptoms of whiplash?
The symptoms can range from a sore and achy neck all the way to severe and debilitating neck pain as well as any of the following:
- ringing in the ears
